I joined the Micheli lab in May 2001, shortly after my graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My experience at the Micheli lab has given me a great introduction to Marine Science, specifically Marine Ecology. I get to spend a lot of time out of doors sampling the intertidal community and setting up study sites. Armed with quadrat and clipboard in hand, I.ve gained an intimate knowledge of the local intertidal communities. I.ve also honed my ability to estimate the ferocity of waves by sound alone-I've still got a long way to go.

In addition to surveying the local intertidal communities, I.ve been working on building and installing wave intensity meters, called dynamometers, which we use to characterize the relative difference in wave exposure between our study sites. Installing these meters has been a challenging adventure complete with treasure hunts for National Geodetic Survey benchmarks and an industrial pneumatic hammer drill run on SCUBA tanks. I.ve also helped start up an experiment studying the effects of trampling in the intertidal, and I.m currently working on a study of the biases between quadrat surveys with the naked eye, with a digital camera, and a 35mm camera.

Outside of lab, I enjoy the California climate by biking, hiking, and free diving. I also work part time at a wine tasting room, which has been a great opportunity to learn about the local wine culture. I love those Carmel Valley Pinot Noirs!
